My life and times as a professional MakeUp Artist

Bohemian Look inspired by Stevie Nicks After seeing Fleetwood Mac this week at the Staples Center in LA I had to do a post on Stevie Nicks.

Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks

Stevie is one of the original Bohemian Rock n Roll Queens and her style and look back in the 70’s was as distinctive and inspirational as it is for any bohemian look today.  I found this article titled calling her Best Hippie-Queen Earth Mother and in it Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine talks about the influence Stevie Nicks has had on her.

Here are some of my favorite images of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac.

Fleetwood Mac Rumors back of album cover

Fleetwood Mac Rumors back of album cover

Above is the back cover of Fleetwood Mac Rumors album cover is so great.  I especially love the dress and scarf worn by Christine McVie  here most of all… this came out in 1977 and Chrstine’s outfit still rocks in my book!  Sorry Stevie… but in this case Christine’s look is inspired!

Stevie Nicks in top hat!  When Stevie came out on stage at the show this week in one of her wardrobe changes wearing her trademark top hat the crowd went nuts!

Other than fashion and long cool effortless looking hair Stevie mostly kept her makeup simple and it works for a bohemian look then and today as well.  To create makeup look for yourself begin with great skin.  Having skin that is fresh and looks natural begins with skincare and then adding concealer where needed and foundation if you choose to use it.  I have been using the Clarisonic cleansing brush and love the way it deep cleans my skin and gently exfoliates daily.  Gentle exfoliation is a key to a great complexion.  http://www.clarisonic.com/  Next I suggest my facial serum Heir Atelier Ultimate Make Up Prep, which is a fantastic foundation primer that gives you a natural dewy finish that you can follow with foundation or if you prefer just add concealer where you need it.  HeirAtelier.com Stevie looks like she may have only used Mascara in earlier years and then added eyeliner a little later.  The image at the top of the post with the beret also looks like the inside rim line of her eyes is lined in either a flesh or white liner which makes the eyes appear larger. Protip: That is a great makeup trick to try if you want to make your eyes look larger and be sure to use a flesh tone pencil for the most natural look. Protip: If you are fair to medium like Stevie use a dark brown Mascara and eyeliner that looks most natural.  If you are darker in skintone or haircolor you can wear black more easily and still look natural. Follow the look with a lip gloss only to duplicate the look.  Choose one that looks best for your skin tone and coloring to create your version of a Stevie Nicks Bohemian Inspired look.

Beat the summer heat: Makeup Artist Kendra Richards offers beauty solutions:

Alternative to foundation:

Arcona Bronzer-self tanner

For the most natural look, summer is the perfect time to go easy on the makeup and choose this genius bronzer-self tanner instead.  This self tanner is natural and non toxic which is just one of the reasons I love it.Arcona Bronzer Self-Tanner

When your skin looks beautifully bronzed use Heir Atelier Ultimate Make Up Prep without foundation for the perfect summer glow, it will keep your skin hydrated and give it that gorgeous summer glow.  It’s not just for wearing under makeup!

Powder foundation with SPF

If you feel you want coverage and your liquid foundation is melting off try a mineral powder foundation by Colorescience which also gives you SPF coverage.

Waterproof Concealer

Even if you choose not to wear a full face of makeup but are like most people you need some concealer and want one that will stand up to hot and maybe humid days.  Here are a couple of makeup solutions

NYX Waterproof Concealer Stick that you an use anywhere on the faceNYX Waterproof concealer

Lancome Effacernes

Waterproof Protective Undereye Concealer

Cheek Color

I suggest a cheek stain or cream blusher for the most natural look.

Hourglass Aura Sheer Cheek Stain

Tarte Cheek Stain

Apply and blend quickly as it will set after 20 seconds and stay all day

Waterproof eyeliner

DiorShow liner and Dior Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil are both excellent and stay put.

Drugstore brand Waterproof Eyeliner:

Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal holds up great.

Lashes

For a waterproof Mascara I suggest one of my all time makeup kit favorites in the waterproof formula: Loreal Voluminous Mascara

As a great makeup alternative to waterproof Mascara I always suggest one of my personal favorites:

Blinc Mascara that forms tubes around the lashes and will stay put all day and then quickly rinses off at night with only the combination of both water and pressure.  When you clean your face you run your lashes through your fingers with the water and it falls off into the sink.  Super easy!

Lips

Finish with a lip stain like one from Urban Decay Lip Envy Lip Stain

Urban Decay Lip Envy Lip Stain

Armani Cosmetics Lip Maestro for a more polished look, it’s matte but not drying and has more staying power than traditional lipgloss.

Makeup artist tip:  Less powder and more blotting.  When it’s hot and humid too much powder doesn’t work, instead use oil blotting papers.  You can buy them anywhere from the drugstore to Sephora and makeup specialty stores. #protip

Now you can stop wondering if your makeup will last through the day and go out and enjoy the summer!

On one of my jobs this week, Rachael my digital tech mentioned that she was trying to figure out how to create the smokey eye that I had done on our model that day .  That was when I knew that this would have to be my blog post for the week. I know that the smokey eye has been done to death, so if you already have that down, this post isn’t for you… if not please continue and I hope this helps you create your own.

The steps to create this smokey eye that I did on model Natalia this week. Her beautiful smokey eye lasted through the entire shoot day without needing any touch ups. The key is in the prepping of her eyelid with the cream shadow… read how to get this look below!

Next I used Chanel Les 4 Ombres eye shadow palette in 33 Prelude and began  using the greyish brown shadow from the upper left hand corner of the palette on her lid on top of the cream shadow that I had just applied and feathering it up and out.  Next, I followed that with the darker plum/grey shadow from the bottom right hand corner of the palette and applied it to the outer eye area and blended it inward to give definition to the eye and depth.

I competed the shadow using the light shade from the upper right hand corner of the palette by applying it on her brow bone.  Below see the products that I used to create the look in the photo above.  Additionally I used  Heir Atelier Ultimate Make Up Prep   http://www.heiratelier.com/      followed by   Armani foundation http://www.giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com/

http://www.chanel.com/en_US/fragrance-beauty/Makeup-88484

To complete the look, I lined Natalia’s eye in Bobbie Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil Mahogany eyeliner pencil and then smudged a mix of both eye shadow colors under her eyes concentrating the shadow on the outer edges and not carrying the color all the way in to help create a wider eye and not close the eye off.  I lined the inner upper and lower waterline of her eyes with the Mahogany eye pencil for added definition and finished the look with several coats of mascara on the upper lashes.

Achieving Dewy Summer Skin Is One Bottle Away…

Summertime beauty essentials:

This is a short post of just a few of my fav summertime beauty essentials… more posts to come with additional items!

I am a big advocate of sun protection… so I will begin with that.  Making sure to protect your face, neck and chest from sun damage and accelerated skin aging requires protection year round.

One great time saver that really addresses the needs of sun protection & make up is the brand Colorescience  http://www.colorescience.com/

with the Sunforgettable line make it easy to apply and reapply sun protection ever 2-3 hrs which is what you need to do to get proper sun protection.    You can carry one of their handy mineral sunscreen with brush in your purse so that you can reapply when you are out without concern about re doing your make up.

Colorescience also have a lip gloss that has an SPF 35 it’s called Sunforgettable lip shine.  Your lips can burn and need protection also so this is a great make up solution.

A great daily lip balm with SPF: I love Blistex Deep Renewal lip treatment and buy them by the dozen and store them around the house and in my purse.  It’s been my go to lip balm for a few years and keeps my lips feeling soft and has anti-agingingredients along with SPF15 and fills in the lines on my lips with Hyaluronic acid… there are just too many good things in this product to name.   http://www.blistex.com/

My favorite solution to looking tan without the sun:
While I love the idea of a tan face in the summer but instead hide from the sun because I know better, I create the look with  Arcona Bronzer/Self Tanner  it’s non toxic and oil free self tanner but very hydrating so my skin looks like it has a fresh healthy glow without the sun damage.   http://www.arcona.com/

When wearing make up myself or on my clients I always start with a clean face and apply Heir Atelier Ultimate Make Up Prep before applying sunscreen.  It hydrates and nourishes the skin to keep make up fresh throughout the day because skin is the canvas for make up.  www.HeirAtelier.com

A great solution to maintain mascara is to use Blinc mascara http://www.blincinc.com/  this unique mascara forms tubes around the lashes and only comes off with both water and pressure… I think it’s better than waterproof mascara and love using it for anyone that has problems with mascara that travels under the eyes or just needs more staying power from their mascara.  And at the end of the night you don’t need special remover… just wash your face and run your lashes between your fingers with water and the mascara will come off easily!

And Goe Oil from http://jaoltd.com/   This is my favorite body oil that has the most gorgeous scent. The ingredients are 100% natural and I use it on my body as well as on the ends of my hair to smooth dry ends that get an extra beating in the summer sun.  I use this oil to moisturize my skin as well as use it in place of a perfume.. it smells like an island holiday!

Summertime Nails: Trends and Classics

Lets begin with Nude polish, it’s a classic though and not really a trend, but there have been some changes in options that are worth mentioning.  See HIPPxRGB  http://www.rgbcosmetics.com/      who have created a line of  nude polishes that works with all skin tones… much the same way that foundation for the face needs to be flattering and work with your skin tone.  This is a brilliant idea!

Keep it Clean… Make Up Artist & Model must have beauty item

A Beauty Insider tip for everyone:  A Make Up Artist and Model must have that every woman can use is one of my kit essentials: the make up remover wipes.  I always carry them for the girls after shoots and some models like to travel with them as well.  It’s often the last thing I am pressing into their hands as we say our farwells after a shoot and they run off to catch their plane to the next booking. Wipes are a great way to remove the make up while they are in the car on the way to the airport.  Even if the girls aren’t catching a flight many want to be able to clean their skin after a shoot and having a great wipe that is gentle and really does remove the make up from the day is important.

In my personal life I use make up wipes to cleanse my skin after a hike or yoga class before I get home to keep my skin fresh and clean.  Another use are for those late nights when you really don’t want to take the time to clean your face before bed… now you have no excuse, it takes under a minute and there is no need to rinse after.  In the hot summer months its the perfect way to freshen up or when going from day to night from the office.  They are easy to throw in your bag or desk at work to have whenever you need them.

I have tried many wipes over the years and my current favorite make up remover wipes are the Gentle Cleansing Wipes from FAB First Aid Beauty    http://www.firstaidbeauty.com/

Besides being very effective at removing make up  quickly and gently, I love that they do not contain Alcohol, Oil, Parabens, Harsh Chemicals or Colorants.

So now you know how Make Up Artists and Models keep it clean!

This week I am so excited to share this post from Daily Candy featuring my facial serum Ultimate Make Up Prep.  That Daily Candy chose to include Heir Atelier in its post about primers is such an honor.

DailyCandy Heir

A short version of my story is this: Heir Atelier Ultimate Make Up Prep is a facial serum specifically designed to be all you need to use on clean skin to wear under makeup to help skin look hydrated and radiant and keep make up looking fresher throughout the day.  Initially created in my kitchen for my work as a makeup artist, I began receiving requests from celebrities and fellow makeup artists wanting to purchase it so I found a chemist to replicate my serum and have made it available to everyone and not just the entertainment industry insiders.

How To Become A Make Up Artist

People often ask me how I became a make up artist or how they can become a make up artist so I decided to create a little video to answer that question.  I hope that you find it helpful.  One thing to remember is that this is a field that people come to from many different backgrounds and each working artist has their own unique path that got them to where they are today.  My tips are to help you have some direction and to help you move forward more quickly. I wish you the best of luck!  And if you do any of the things I suggest here please write me and let me know, I would love to hear how you have created your own path and what you are doing.
